About

Meharry Medical College established the Diaspora Human Genomics Institute (DHGI) in 2021 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing human health through genomics and education, with a commitment to the inclusion of individuals of African ancestry.
Mission and Goals
DHGI is committed to building trust in genomics research through transparency and innovative action. We train and equip the next generation of scientists, while developing tools and platforms that support forward-looking research and education.
Partnerships
DHGI partners with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to expand access to genomic research, foster educational opportunities, and build pathways for leadership in science and medicine.
DHGI governs the Together for CHANGE™ (T4C) initiative. The initiative is currently funded through a coalition of biopharma companies—Regeneron, AstraZeneca, Novo Nordisk, and Roche—committed to broadening participation in genomics research.
Why It Matters
Genomics research has long struggled to accurately represent all communities, leaving critical gaps in data and outcomes. DHGI is working to change that by expanding engagement with populations historically excluded from research and education spaces. Its approach centers respect, transparency, and active involvement, ensuring that all communities are informed participants in shaping the future of science and health.
